SS31 selectively accumulates in the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) and binds to cardiolipin — a phospholipid unique to mitochondria. This stabilises cardiolipin-cytochrome c interactions, optimising electron transport chain (ETC) efficiency and reducing electron leak that generates harmful ROS. It also inhibits the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP), preventing apoptosis under stress.
Subcutaneous injection. Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water. Best administered consistently at the same time daily for mitochondrial protection protocols. IV administration used in clinical studies.
